Former Indian captain and spinner Bishan Singh Bedi has passed away at the age of 77 in Delhi after a prolonged illness.
Bedi, who was considered one of the greatest left-arm spinners, was part of the famous Indian spin quartet consisting of Bhagwath Chandrasekhar, Erapalli Prasanna and Srinivas Venkataraghavan in the 1970s.
In his distinguished first-class career, Bedi collected 1560 wickets – more than any other Indian cricketer. Making his Test debut in 1967 against the West Indies. His last appearance was against England at the Oval in 1979. Despite taking only seven ODI wickets, Bedi was part of the team that gave India its first win in the format. That victory came against East Africa in the 1975 World Cup. The left-arm spinner also had a very successful time in county cricket with Northamptonshire, leading Delhi to the Ranji Trophy title in 1979 and 1980.
Bedi was the first professional head coach of the Indian national team in 1990 and emphasized fitness. After leaving the Indian national team, Bedi coached several state teams and led Punjab to its only Ranji Trophy victory in the season of 1992 and 1993.

His son Angad Bedi is an Indian actor and former model, and his daughter-in-law Neha Dhupia is a well-known Bollywood actress. Former Indian captain Bishan Singh Bedi passed away on Monday October 23, 2023 after prolonged illness. He was 77 years old.
