History

IPL stands for Indian Premier League, which is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India. The IPL was founded by BCCI India in 2007 and has since become the most popular cricket league in the world. The IPL consists of eight teams representing various Indian cities. Each team plays a total of 14 matches, seven at home and seven away, with the top four teams advancing to the playoffs. The playoffs consist of two qualifiers, an eliminator, and a final. The league has attracted many of the world’s top cricket players, with players from India and around the world participating in the tournament. The league has also been a major source of revenue for the BCCI, team owners, and broadcasters, with large sums of money being generated through sponsorships, advertising, and television rights.

IPL 2008

IPL 2008 was the launching season of the Indian Premier League, which was held from April 18th to June 1st, 2008. The tournament featured eight franchises representing various Indian cities, with each team comprising a mix of Indian and international players. The tournament was played in a round-robin format, with each team playing a total of 14 matches.

It all started on 18th April at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore and Brendon McCullum scored 158* off 73 deliveries for Kolkata Knight Riders against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the first-ever IPL match. The final of IPL 2008 was played between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on June 1st, 2008, at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Rajasthan Royals (RR) won the match by three wickets to become the first-ever IPL champions.

Shane Watson of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) was named the Player of the Tournament, while Shaun Marsh of the Kings XI Punjab won the Orange Cap for being the top run-scorer and Sohail Tanvir of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) won the Purple Cap for being the top wicket-taker in the tournament.

IPL 2009

IPL 2009 was the 2nd season of the League, which was held from April 18th to May 24th, 2009. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in India, but due to security concerns, it was played in South Africa across nine different venues. The tournament featured eight franchises, with each team comprising a mix of international and Indian players. The final of IPL 2009 was played between the Deccan Chargers (DC) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on May 24th, 2009, at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. Deccan Chargers won the match by six runs to become the second IPL champions.

Adam Gilchrist of the Deccan Chargers was named the Player of the Tournament, while Matthew Hayden of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won the Orange Cap for being the top run-scorer and RP Singh of the Deccan Chargers won the Purple Cap for being the top wicket-taker in the tournament.

IPL 2010

IPL 2010 was the 3rd season of the League, which was held from March 12th to April 25th, 2010. The tournament featured eight franchises, with each team comprising a mix of international and Indian players. The format of the tournament remained the same as IPL 2008 and IPL 2009. The final of IPL 2010 was played between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 25th, 2010, at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won the match by 22 runs to become the 3rd IPL champions.

Sachin Tendulkar of the Mumbai Indians (MI) was named the Player of the Tournament, while Sachin also won the Orange Cap for being the top run-scorer in the tournament. Pragyan Ojha of the Deccan Chargers (DC) won the Purple Cap for being the top wicket-taker in the tournament.

IPL 2011

IPL 2011 was the 4th season of the League, which was held from April 8th to May 28th, 2011. The tournament featured ten franchises, with the addition of two new teams, Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala. The format of the tournament was slightly different from the previous seasons, with each team playing a total of 14 matches in the league stage. The final of IPL 2011 was played between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on May 28th, 2011, at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Chennai Super Kings won the match by 58 runs to become the 2nd team to win the IPL title for the 2nd time.

Chris Gayle of the Royal Challengers Bangalore was named the Player of the Tournament, while Chris also won the Orange Cap for being the top run-scorer in the tournament. Lasith Malinga of the Mumbai Indians won the Purple Cap for being the top wicket-taker in the tournament.

IPL 2012

IPL 2012 was the 5th season of the Indian League, which was held from April 4th to May 27th, 2012. The tournament featured nine franchises and Kochi Tuskers Kerala was terminated before the start of the season. The format of the tournament remained the same as IPL 2011, with each team playing a total of 16 matches in the league stage. The final of IPL 2012 was played between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on May 27th, 2012, at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Kolkata Knight Riders won the match by five wickets to become the IPL champions for the first time.

Sunil Narine of the Kolkata Knight Riders was named the Player of the Tournament, while Chris Gayle of the Royal Challengers Bangalore won the Orange Cap for being the top run-scorer in the tournament. Morne Morkel of the Delhi Daredevils won the Purple Cap for being the top wicket-taker in the tournament.

IPL 2013

IPL 2013 was the 6th season of the Indian League, which was held from April 3rd to May 26th, 2013. The tournament featured nine franchises, with the addition of the Sunrisers Hyderabad, who replaced the terminated Deccan Chargers franchise. The format of the tournament remained the same as IPL 2012. The final of IPL 2013 was played between the Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians on May 26th, 2013, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Mumbai Indians won the match by 23 runs to become the IPL champions for the first time.

Shane Watson of the Rajasthan Royals was named the Player of the Tournament, while Michael Hussey of the Chennai Super Kings won the Orange Cap for being the top run-scorer in the tournament. Dwayne Bravo of the Chennai Super Kings won the Purple Cap for being the top wicket-taker in the tournament.

IPL 2014

IPL 2014 was the 7th season of the Indian League, which was held from April 16th to June 1st, 2014. The tournament featured eight franchises, with the termination of the Pune Warriors India franchise after the previous season. The format of the tournament remained the same as IPL 2013. The final of IPL 2014 was played between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Kings XI Punjab on June 1st, 2014, at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Kolkata Knight Riders won the match by three wickets to become the IPL champions for the second time.

Glenn Maxwell of the Kings XI Punjab was named the Player of the Tournament, while Robin Uthappa of the Kolkata Knight Riders won the Orange Cap for being the top run-scorer in the tournament. Mohit Sharma of the Chennai Super Kings won the Purple Cap for being the top wicket-taker in the tournament.

IPL 2015

IPL 2015 was the 8th season of the Indian League, which was held from April 8th to May 24th, 2015. The tournament featured eight franchises, with no new team additions or terminations. The format of the tournament remained the same as IPL 2014. The final of IPL 2015 was played between the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings on May 24th, 2015, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Mumbai Indians won the match by 41 runs to become the IPL champions for the second time.

Andre Russell of the Kolkata Knight Riders was named the Player of the Tournament, while David Warner of the Sunrisers Hyderabad won the Orange Cap for being the top run-scorer in the tournament. Dwayne Bravo of the Chennai Super Kings won the Purple Cap for being the top wicket-taker in the tournament.

IPL 2016

IPL 2016 was the 9th season of the Indian League, which was held from April 9th to May 29th, 2016. The tournament featured eight franchises and the format of the tournament remained the same as IPL 2015. The final of IPL 2016 was played between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 29th, 2016, at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Sunrisers Hyderabad won the match by eight runs to become the IPL champions for the first time.

Virat Kohli of the Royal Challengers Bangalore was named the Player of the Tournament, while Virat Kohli also won the Orange Cap for being the top run-scorer in the tournament with 973 runs in 16 matches, the most by any batsman in a single IPL season. Bhuvneshwar Kumar of the Sunrisers Hyderabad won the Purple Cap for being the top wicket-taker in the tournament.

IPL 2017

IPL 2017 was the 10th season of the Indian League, which was held from April 5th to May 21st, 2017. The tournament featured eight franchises and the format of the tournament remained the same as IPL 2016. The final of IPL 2017 was played between the Mumbai Indians and the Rising Pune Supergiant on May 21st, 2017, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. Mumbai Indians won the match by one run to become the IPL champions for the third time.

Ben Stokes of the Rising Pune Supergiant was named the Player of the Tournament, while David Warner of the Sunrisers Hyderabad won the Orange Cap for being the top run-scorer in the tournament. Bhuvneshwar Kumar of the Sunrisers Hyderabad won the Purple Cap for being the top wicket-taker in the tournament for the second consecutive year.

IPL 2018

IPL 2018 was the 11th season of the Indian League, which was held from April 7th to May 27th, 2018. The tournament featured eight franchises and the format of the tournament remained the same as IPL 2017. The final of IPL 2018 was played between the Chennai Super Kings and the Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 27th, 2018, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Chennai Super Kings won the match by eight wickets to become the IPL champions for the third time.

IPL 2019

IPL 2019 was the 12th season of the Indian League, which was held from March 23rd to May 12th, 2019. The tournament featured eight franchises, with no new team additions or terminations. The format of the tournament remained the same as IPL 2018. The final of IPL 2019 was played between the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings on May 12th, 2019, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. Mumbai Indians won the match by one run to become the IPL champions for the fourth time.

IPL 2020

IPL 2020 was the 13th season of the Indian League, which was held from September 19th to November 10th, 2020. The tournament featured eight franchises, with no new team additions or terminations, and the tournament was modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with all matches played in the UAE (United Arab Emirates) without any spectators. The league stage featured each team playing a total of 14 matches, followed by playoffs. The final of IPL 2020 was played between the Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Capitals on November 10th, 2020, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. Mumbai Indians won the match by five wickets to become the IPL champions for the fifth time.

Jofra Archer of the Rajasthan Royals was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, while KL Rahul of the Kings XI Punjab won the Orange Cap for being the top run-scorer in the tournament. Kagiso Rabada of the Delhi Capitals won the Purple Cap for being the top wicket-taker in the tournament.

IPL 2021

IPL 2021 was the 14th season of the Indian League, which was scheduled to be held from April 9th to May 30th, 2021. The tournament featured eight franchises, with no new team additions or terminations. However, the tournament was suspended indefinitely on May 4th, 2021, due to a rise in COVID-19 cases. The BCCI later announced that the remaining matches of IPL 2021 would be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 19th to October 15th, 2021. The tournament resumed and the format of the tournament remained the same. The final of IPL 2021 was played between the Chennai Super Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders on October 15th, 2021, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. The Chennai Super Kings won the match by 27th runs to become the IPL champions for the fourth time.

Harshal Patel of the Royal Challengers Bangalore was named the Purple Cap winner for being the top wicket-taker in the tournament, while KL Rahul of the Punjab Kings won the Orange Cap for being the top run-scorer in the tournament.

IPL 2022

IPL 2022 was the 15th season of the Indian League, which was scheduled to be held from March 26th to May 29th, 2022. The tournament featured ten franchises, with the addition of two new teams, Gujrat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, and each team played a total of 14 matches in the league stage. The final of IPL 2022 was played between the Gujrat Titans and the Rajasthan Royals on May 29th, 2022, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Gujrat Titans won the match by 7 wickets to become the IPL champions for the first time.

Jos Buttler of the Rajasthan Royals was named the Player of the Tournament, while Jos Buttler also won the Orange Cap for being the top run-scorer in the tournament. Yuzvendra Chahal of the Rajasthan Royals won the Purple Cap for being the top wicket-taker in the tournament.

IPL 2023

IPL 2023 was the 16th season of the Indian League, which was scheduled to be held from March 31st March to May 29th, 2023. The tournament featured ten franchises, with no new team additions or terminations. Each team played a total of 14 matches in the league stage. The final of IPL 2023 was played between the Gujrat Titans and the Chennai super kings on May 29th, 2023, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Chennai super kings won the match by 5 wickets (DLS method) to become the IPL champions for the fifth time.

Devon Conway of the Chennai super kings was named the Player of the match. Shubman Gill of the Gujrat Titans was named the Player of the Tournament, while Shubman Gill also won the Orange Cap for being the top run-scorer in the tournament. Mohammed Shami of the Gujrat Titans won the Purple Cap for being the top wicket-taker in the tournament. Delhi Capitals win the Fairplay Award. Rashid Khan of the Gujrat Titans wins the award for Catch of the Season, for his catch of Kyle Mayers in the Gujrat Titans (GT) v Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) game. Yashasvi Jaiswal of the Rajasthan Royals wins the Emerging Player of the Season award. He made 625 runs at a strike-rate of 164.

Conclusion:

Mumbai Indians (MI) and  Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are the most successful team in IPL, having won the title a record five times. Two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are the only other team with more than one IPL title. Deccan Chargers, Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad are the only team to lift the one trophy in their pocket. Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Royal Challengers Bangalore are the only teams to have not lifted the title despite featuring in all 15 previous seasons.
